A 25-year-old bus conductor, Mustapha Koladoye, was on Tuesday brought before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for snatching a mobile phone from a motorist.

Koladoye, who lives under the Obalende Bridge, is facinga two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing. He, however, denied the charges.

The prosecutor, SP Augustine Orji, told the court that Koladoye committed the offences alongside an accomplice at 11.10 p.m. on Nov. 28 along the VGC roundabout. Lekki-Epe Expressway, Ajah, Lagos.

He said the accused and his accomplice stole a Nokia Lumia 925 mobile phone from one Mr Udochukwu Edofa, while he was driving his car in traffic. Continue after the cut...

According to Orji, in order to distract the complainant during the theft, the accused rained punches on the complainant through the window of his car, while his accomplice took his phone.
Orji said that luck, however, ran out on Koladoye when Udochukwu left his car, gave pursuit, caught him and handed him over to police authorities.

The prosecutor added that the complainant was, however, unable to get his phone back and that the stolen Nokia Lumia mobile phone was valued at N95,000.

He said the offences contravened Sections 285(b) and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 prescribes three years in jail for anyone convicted of stealing.

The Magistrate, Mrs Salama Matepo, granted Koladoye bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Matepo adjourned the case to Jan. 5, 2015 for mention. (NAN)
