First Baby Born After Womb Transplant

It's a medical first.
A baby in Sweden was born in September after his mother had a womb transplant. According to doctors, the woman was born without a uterus. The 36-year-old received the uterus from a 61-year-old friend.

The unnamed couple used IVF to produce 11 embryos, which were frozen. Doctors at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg then performed the womb transplant, and the woman took immune system suppression drugs to keep from rejecting the uterus. A year later, they implanted an embryo, which resulted in a pregnancy.

Doctors said the baby was born prematurely, weighing just 3.9 pounds. The baby boy was born at 31 weeks after his mother developed re-eclampsia and the baby's heart rate became abnormal.
Both the baby and the mother are reportedly doing well.
