Suspected Boko Haram members brutally killed scores of fishermen in Doron Baga, Kukawa LGA, Borno State. While Premium Times (PT) reports with reference to its source that
the number of fish traders murdered is 56, according to Vanguard the
death toll corresponds 48 people.
The tragedy occurred the early morning of Friday, November 21, when the men where returning from a fishing expedition.
Spokesman of he Nigeria Vigilante Group in Borno State, Muhammed Gava, disclosed this to PT correspondent: He added that “the gunmen forced them off their boats, and, at gunpoint, began to slaughter them one after the other”.
“They slaughtered 48 of them whose corpses our members found near the river, while corpses of 8 others whose necks had bruises were found floating near the river bank. The bodies that were recovered from the river were of those whom we suspect the Boko Haram terrorists’ knives could not pierce through their skins, so they had to tie their legs and hands with ropes, then dropped them into the river to die.” Continue reading after the cut....
According to a Baga official, who pleaded anonymity, the fish vendors said they had previously received written threats from alleged Boko Haram members who “warned that they would be attacking the village very soon”.
The head of the fish traders association narrated to AFP how the gunmen stormed “a route linking Nigeria with Chad near the fishing village of Doron Baga on the shores of Lake Chad on Thursday and killed a group of 48 fish traders on their way to Chad to buy fish”.
Gamandi, who was speaking from Maiduguri, Borno State capital, confirmed that some fishermen were slaughtered and some were drowned in the lake.
“The Boko Haram gunmen slit the throats of some of the men and tied the hands and legs of the others before throwing them into the lake to drown.”
A military source from Maiduguri confirmed the development adding however that details were still sketchy.
Farming and fishing along the shores of Lake Chad has been on the decline over incessant Boko Haram attacks, which forced many fish traders abandon their job.
It would be recalled that in August the insurgents reportedly abducted 97 people and killed 28 villagers in Dogon Baga. The Chadian military however managed to rescue 85 of the kidnapped people, including women and children.
An incident similar to that one, which occurred on Friday, took place in May, 2013, when about twenty fishermen were killed by insurgents in Doron Baga.
